LIN MoBai (墨白)
Contemporary artist — Lines and Lights of an Inner World
In MoBai Lin’s work, painting becomes an act of breathing.
Her works envelop the viewer in a diffuse atmosphere, like a landscape veiled in morning mist, bathed in the pale light of dawn, or stirred by the cool air of a forest clearing. Nothing is frontal, nothing is fixed. The surface vibrates, hesitates, and unfolds in a subtle balance between appearance and disappearance.
Her paintings invite the viewer to slow down, to settle inwardly, offering a space of silent and deeply soothing contemplation.
A pictorial universe between tradition and contemporary freedom
Born in 1985 in Fuzhou, MoBai Lin began painting at an early age under the influence of her father, himself a painter. She later graduated from the Chinese Painting Department of the China Academy of Art, specializing in bird-and-flower painting, where she acquired a rigorous mastery of traditional techniques.
Rather than remaining confined within these traditions, the artist chose to transcend them. She frees ink from its classical frameworks and opens it to contemporary forms, creating inner landscapes in which tradition becomes a foundation rather than a boundary. Since 2009, her work has been exhibited in China, Japan, and Taiwan, establishing a coherent and distinctive international trajectory.
Process, material, and the living world
MoBai Lin’s practice is grounded in a sensitive exploration of ink enriched by mixed-media techniques.
To the precision of gongbi methods, she integrates organic materials—twigs, soil, stones, and plants—directly into the pictorial surface. Painting becomes a living field, marked by natural traces, where matter carries time and imperfection.
Colors appear in fragmented zones, softly emerging rather than asserting themselves. They do not seek brilliance, but rather a form of quiet resilience, a silent stability. Wilderness is present, yet calmed. Nature is not represented; it is felt and inwardly inhabited.

An inner landscape shaped by calm and resonance
MoBai Lin’s works emanate a profound sense of calm.
In a world marked by speed and visual saturation, her painting functions as a mental pause, almost therapeutic in nature. The viewer drifts without imposed narrative, entering a space where blur becomes refuge and imperfection reveals a fragile yet enduring beauty.
Her landscapes do not tell stories; they offer experiences. An invitation to contemplate, to feel, and to reconnect with an inner silence.
Background and selected milestones
MoBai Lin currently lives and works between Beijing and Izu, Japan.
Her work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Asia since 2009.
In 2023, her first solo exhibition at LooLooLook Gallery, Paris, marked a significant milestone, introducing French audiences to an œuvre of strong formal maturity, imbued with silent poetry and meditative depth.
The gallery’s perspective
At LooLooLook Gallery, we support MoBai Lin for the rare quality of her vision and the calming strength of her work.
Her painting avoids spectacle and assertion, favoring instead attentiveness, duration, and depth. It opens an inner space of perception where tradition and contemporaneity engage in a balanced and meaningful dialogue.
Through her work, MoBai Lin proposes another way of seeing—and perhaps also of inhabiting—the world.
